a lot of comparisons have been made between the wts and political dictatorial governments.
some hope that while the political dictatorial governments tend to develop fatal flaws that eventually bring about their demise, the same may be happening in the wts.
while there may be outward similarities between wts and dictatorial regimes, but the inherent political and social power structure is different.
What could bring about change in the WTS is another schism at the top.
A Bethelite friend is firmly convinced this WILL happen, and the child abuse scandal will be the trigger.
He is a faithful JW, though he is fully aware of the problems at the top, describing the atmosphere there as 'rotten.' His attitude is that the child abuse scandal may be Jehovah's way of 'cleansing the organisation,' and it will result in many of the GB being purged, with some possibly even facing prison. These would be the hard-line members who have insisted on retaining the existing policies, of whom Jaracz is the prime mover.
When we talked about this, I must admit I was rather cruel to my friend and scoffed at his suggestion that Jehovah was 'causing' all these kids to suffer, just to make a point. I also suggested that the remaining GB-ers would continue to appoint replacements 'in their own image,' even after the anointed-only rule is scrapped. He was silent after that...

my mother told me that her bookstudy overseer asked his group this question---"why do you think a mature brother in the truth would just suddenly leave and stop coming to meetings?

This is the issue, in a nutshell. It's like the Mafia: they won't let you just leave!
I agree with willyloman. At our last CO visit, he made a comment during the elders meeting that we should never destroy the Record Cards of inactive publishrs, as they're always part of the congregation. My heart sank, as I was already planning how to to get out.
And I sympathise with you, minimus: I appear to be in an identical situation to you, now fading. Best wishes, and I hope it isn't the prelude to something worse...

i have been away for a couple of weeks, distracted by legal, work and health issues.
it all came down at a time when i am trying to get some things done regarding the jw child abuse issues.. added to my heart disease is disbetes ... cool ... in addition to not having fats, cholestrol, caffiene, cigarettes and sodium ... now i have to cut out carbs, sugar, coke, and take more medicine.
my diet is reduced to a thin piece of clear fibre paper every other night, forty pills, and purified water.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago.It was a bit scary at first.

i was just a little kid when the 1975 thing came about, didn't pay much attention to it, after it was over, my parents told me it was just some people being over anxious, and being about 8 at the time i believed it, now when you research you find some amazing articles.
what do you remember being told about 1975 as the year got closer ?
I remember it well. Everyone was convinced this was "it" (Armageddon). I started pioneering that summer, mainly due to peer pressure.
But I can honestly say, whenever talking to anyone about it, I always voiced my own personal reservations, based on Mt 24:44: " On this account YOU too prove yourselves ready, because at an hour that YOU do not think to be it, the Son of man is coming." To me, that everyone was SO expecting it simply proved that it was not to be.
Why was everyone so convinced? Not just by the various Watchtower and Kingdom Ministry articles. For many 'sensitive' subjects on which the Society don't want to commit themselves in print, they use the Circuit Overseers to stunning effect.
Whether at circuit assemblies, talks to congregations during circuit visits, or meetings with circuit or congregation elders, the Governing Body, and especially the Service Committee/Department, know they have a direct conduit to the sheep that totally bypasses the printing presses.
Back then, it was 1975, mini skirts, long hair (for men) and the evils of doing the twist! Nowadays, it's dealing with child abuse (to elders only) and "give us your money, we need another printing press."
They know they can say what they like and there's no official record, "nothing in writing" that can come back to haunt them in later years...
